Artist Statement

In the tradition of realist art, I try to faithfully represent objects, but with an eye for an unusual element, subject or subtle level of surprise. In still life, elevating everyday objects to the level of art is a continuing challenge. Figures and portraits inform an exploration of the iconic and elusive elements of drawing and painting; light, values, colour, form and line. The struggle is in meticulous observation to see beyond distracting details and capture only the essential.

Since returning to part-time studies at York University in 2006, my art practice has evolved to include intaglio and other forms of printmaking. The endless variety of expressive ways to produce images is an entirely new challenge. Oil painting and drawing will always be a significant part of my artistic output but printmaking is a welcome addition.

I hope I inspire those who see my work to look differently at the beautiful, the unusual and the commonplace.
