58th Juried Art Exhibition

2026 Juried Art Exhibition

Exhibition Ran: April 24 to May 10,
The Robert McLaughlin Gallery
72 Queen St. Civic Centre, Oshawa

The Oshawa Art Association’s 58th Annual Juried Art Exhibition is one of the Robert McLaughlin Gallery’s most popular annual events, showcasing exceptional paintings and sculptures by some of the Region of Durham’s finest artists. This year’s exhibition features 100 original works of art, celebrating creativity and talent from across the community. Check our Facebook page for photos and Dan’s for videos.

An enthusiastic group of about 400 art supporters cheered as Augusto Dimalanta made his way to accept the GOLD AWARD. The Opening reception was on April 23, a special evening celebrating the arts. Guests were invited to meet and mingle with the talented creators while enjoying music, a cash bar, and great company.

Congratulations to the following artists

As gallery space is limited, our jurors faced a huge challenge to create this show from almost 300 entries.

Meet our 2026 Jurors

Hi-Sook Barker cspwc/tws

Hi-Sook Barker is a professional watercolourist known for her floral works and
Canadian landscapes, depicted in an impressionistic style. Hi-Sook is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (cspwc), and a signature member of the Toronto Watercolour Society (tws). She has achieved success in numerous juried and group shows as well as presenting her own solo gallery shows, and was also a past president of the Ajax Creative Arts club.

Born in South Korea, Hi-Sook began her art studies when she was eleven years old. She was encouraged and supported by an older brother, who became a surrogate father to her after their father died. Her art studies in South Korea focused on oriental brush painting, which typically depicts animals, birds, flowers, and scenes from nature.

A dedicated student by the time Hi-Sook and her brother emigrated to Canada, she’d already won awards and recognition for her art. At twenty years old Hi-Sook turned her attention to watercolours, feeling the medium was a natural evolution from her original studies. Brush painting and watercolour both requiring a “less is more” philosophy, focusing on each brush stroke to achieve the desired outcome, and not painting over and over a subject until you get it right.
Over the years Hi-Sook has built a career as an artist and an art teacher. Although she and her late brother made Canada their home, Hi-Sook also lived in England for ten years but wherever located, she never stopped painting and learning. As a result in 2000 Hi-Sook became an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour. In the same year she was offered the opportunity to teach classes at the Oshawa Senior Centre. Enjoying this initial experience teaching, and with positive feedback from students, it led to more opportunities pursuing this passion.

Hi-Sook has now taught almost full time over the past 25 years across the Durham Region and GTA area. During this time she has conducted countless demonstrations, workshops and classes to a long list of groups, associations, centres etc. Currently she teaches classes at the Visual Arts Centre in Clarington, Momiji Centre, Whitby Station Gallery, online with Bowmanville Adult Association and up north at the Southampton Art School. In previous years she enjoyed teaching at the Bridgewater Retreat in Tweed, Blue Mountain School of Landscape Painting and Loyalist College in Belleville.

 Lucy Manley

Painting landscapes in their seasons in oil, preferably en plein air, is my mainstay. Many of these are also small studies and sketches that lead to creating larger pieces in my studio. The subject is predominately the rugged wilderness as well as pastoral and cityscapes depending on where my travels take me. To capture the essence of the scene, to express my feelings and emotions as well as reveal the beauty that is there is what I want to convey to the viewer. Bold use of colour heightens the visual impact of each painting. Loose, rapidly executed brushstrokes capture the fleeting impressions of what I see giving energy to the image in my visual language.

Since 1995 I have been teaching art classes for Continuing Education for Loyalist College – in Warkworth, Belleville and the College’s Summer ‘plein air’ Workshops; Visual Arts Centre in Bowmanville, Gallery on the Lake in Buckhorn; The Painted Tree in Cobourg; and by invitation to demonstrate and critique at many art associations in Ontario; Le Monastere, Limoux, France, is another painting-teaching destination since 2005.

Lucy is a Member of the East Central Ontario Art Association (ECOAA) since 1979, held the position of Newsletter Editor for 25 years producing a quarterly newsletter to over 400 artist-members. Then she held positions of Secretary, Paint-out Co-ordinator, Historian, Vice-President, President and now Area Representative.
